A woman’s first visit to the gynecologist is not only a milestone and part of “becoming a woman”, it also represents a dreaded venture into the unknown. The mere mention of the word “gynecologist” sends shivers down many a woman’s spine. But in reality, things are not so horrible – and it helps to learn what happens during a gynecological exam before you go to one.
1. Ideally, a woman should undergo her first gynecological examination when she first becomes sexually active. It is actually desirable for a woman to talk to her OBGYN before her first sexual intercourse to get advice and information about contraception and safe sex.
2. However, you are never too young for a visit to the gynecologist and in some countries modern medicine advises that baby girls are examined for early detection of genital deformities.
3. You should not concern yourself with whether your gynecologist is male or female, what should matter is their skill level and level of experience – some of the best gynecologists are male.
4. Your parents need not know about your visit to the OBGYN – doctor patient confidentiality applies. It might however be beneficial for you to consult your parents before your visit, for guidance. In case of abortions, persons below certain age limits need parent contest (age limits differ in different countries).
5. You can undergo gynecological examinations even if you have not had sex yet (if you are a virgin). An ultrasound probe over your abdomen can be used to examine your ovaries and uterus in order to detect any cysts or other issues and an external gynecological exam can be performed on your vagina to check if all is well.
6. If a woman is over the age of 20 and sexually active, she should undergo a Pap smear test (Papanicolau test or cervical smear test).
A pap smear test is a test used in gynecology to detect premalignant and malignant (cancerous) processes in the cervix. The test can also be used to detect STDs.
If you are a woman and are sexually active or plan to be sexually active in the near future, it is advisable to visit a gynecologist for an exam. It’s better to be safe then sorry.
