What To Talk About On A First Date?
A lot of people worry that they will have nothing to talk about on a first date? Although the conversation usually starts by itself and you end up talking about completely unpredictable subjects, the worriers amongst you can keep a small cheat-sheet to get you around those jitters and help avoid those awkward moments of silence.
During a first date you should certainly avoid heavy topics such as divorce of parents, the recent death of a pet, religion, politics, former loves, breakup reasons, etc.
You can help make your first date fun and casual by using some of the the following topics as conversation starters:
What places do you enjoy going out to?
You can’t go wrong with this question. Everyone goes out, including the person you’re on a date with. A favorite pub in town, a story about a clumsy waiter, a great night out in a newly opened bar – the subtopics are endless. Discussing this subject may lead you to talking about a place you both love to go out to – and give you an idea for an ideal place to go to on your second date.
What kind of music do you like?
Regardless of whether you have the same taste in music or not, talking about music is always fun. Even if you like Cher, and the other person is a fan of classical music, music provides you with a wide array of subtopics to discuss – from favorite songs to concert events you have both attended. Just make sure you don’t insult the other person’s choice of music as that could lead to a premature and abrupt date termination.
Do you enjoy sports?
Just like music, sports are another subject you can talk about for hours. Training, competitions, sports achievements, a healthy lifestyle … Even if you personally do not practice sports, take the time to listen to the other person and ask them questions. How often do they train? How do they plan their day to fit sports activities in with all other day to day chores and activities they do.
Have you seen the latest movie (Avatar was a hit when this article was written)?
Movies are another endless topic of conversation. Besides merely listing the films that you like, take the time to explain why you prefer a certain genre (what draws you to it) and ask the same of your companion. Believe it or not, you can learn a lot about a person’s personality from the type of movies they like. Again, make sure to respect the other person’s choice of movie genre, even if you don’t agree with it.
Do you have a Facebook account?
Social media are the in thing nowadays. If you haven’t done so already, as your date for their Facebook details so you can add them as a friend. Why wait for the next date when you can get together online and get to know each other quicker.
Whatever you end up talking about on your first date, make sure you are yourself and just relax. Whether you realize it or not, your date is very much likely to be as nervous about the date as you are. Just have fun and be nice.
